Koyotes Best Wolfpack on the Road
06/06/09 - SPRINGFIELD, MO - Once again the Springfield WolfPack had plenty of opportunities to win their final regular season home game against the Kansas Koyotes, but failure to score on their first three possessions of the game led to a 40-27 win for the Koyotes.
On the first play of the game, Kansas quarterback Carlos Kelley's pass was intercepted by Jonathan Frazier at the WolfPack 19 yard line, but Springfield squandered the chance turning to ball over on downs.
After running back Robbie DuBois picked up 20 yards on 3 carries, it was Kelly's 1-yard run into the end zone with 8:27 remaining to put the Koyotes on the board 7-0.
Springfield was 5 for 8 on 4th down plays for the game, but could not get anything going in the first half. Kansas led 27-0 late in the second quarter after a fumbled snap and two interceptions stopped WolfPack drives in the red zone while the Koyotes countered with a Robbie DuBois run and two Kelly to Dwayne Allen TD’s of 26 and 17 yards.
But with :10 left in the half, Brett Lovekamp's 34 yard reception (on a 4th down and 30), gave the WolfPack the ball on the Koyotes’ 13 yard line. Following a Kansas penalty, WolfPack quarterback Colby Hughes' 7-yard run with no time on the clock broke the shutout.
Springfield scored first to start the second half after getting the ball back on a turnover. Sean Nevills gave the WolfPack hope with a 1 yard TD run set up by Luke Shah's 13 yard reception (again on a 4th down play), and Springfield trailed 27-13 after a missed extra point.
DuBois' second TD run of the game (10 yards) opened the gap for the Koyotes to 20 points (33-13) after the extra point was ruled no good with 6:30 left in the 3rd quarter. Allen's 35 yard reception, and third TD catch of the game, in the 4th quarter ended any chance of a comback, opening a 40-13 lead.
Springfield used a 7 yard pass to Lovekamp with4:35 left in the 4th (2 point conversion failed) to trail by 21. Then, with 54 seconds left in the game a 45 yard pass to Alberto Garcia put 6 more WolfPack points on the board, the 2 point conversion failed for a final 40-27 outcome.
The Koyotes return home this Saturday to face the Iowa Blackhawks. The Blackhawks (5-1) return to Topeka just three weeks since they prevailed over the Koyotes 55-35. Iowa comes off their first loss of the season, a 55-35 barnburner to the Mid-Missouri Outlaws.
The Wolfpack Are Up Next
This week the Koyotes will travel to Springfield, MO to take on the Springfield Wolfpack. Springfield is currently 2-1. Their only loss coming to the Blackhawks two weeks ago by 3 points 35-32.
The Koyotes will have revenge in mind the following week when Iowa comes to Topeka on May 23rd. We will have more info forthcoming on that ballgame.
Koyotes fall to Blackhawks: 34-31
Koyotes’ kicker, Chris Thompson was the ‘brightest light’ on the field Saturday night in the Koyotes’ loss to Iowa. He connected on three of four field goal attempts, one from 52 yards—a record for a Koyotes kicker. It wasn’t enough, however, as the Blackhawks were able to engineer a come-from-behind victory, 34-31, in a classic contest for the two archrivals. Thompson’s other kicks were of 41 and 34 yards. He missed on a fourth late in the game giving the Blackhawks’ kicker, Jerry Lakin, the opportunity to kick the game winning field goal with 46 seconds left in the contest.
The Koyotes’ defense started the game well holding Iowa scoreless in their first two possessions. In Iowa’s third possession, the defense blocked a Lakin field goal attempt which Solomon Brittain picked up and ran in for a touchdown. Thompson added the point after to go along with the two shorter field goals to give the Koyotes a 13 – 0 lead. It looked like it could be a good evening for the Koyotes.
After a late first quarter touchdown by the Blackhawks, their defense stiffened and started the second quarter with a sack of Koyotes quarterback, Carlos Kelly, for a safety, bringing the score to within four, 13 – 9. On the second play of the Koyotes’ next possession, Carlos was intercepted on the Koyotes’ 14 to set up a Steve Rush touchdown that gave Iowa a 16-13 lead.
The Koyotes moved back in front 21-16 with 4:06 left in the first half on a 9-yard TD pass from Kelly to KU product, Jeff Foster. They tacked on another 10 points in the third quarter to move in front by 15 before Iowa’s defense stuffed the Koyotes. Blackhawks quarterback, Chuck Wright, finally found his rhythm and, after being intercepted three times and completing only 5 of his first 12 passes early in the game, connected on 5 of 6 attempts on a pair of touchdown drives in the fourth quarter that pulled the Blackhawks even at 31.
Thompson then had a chance to put the Koyotes ahead and to force Iowa to score a touchdown to win. But on this occasion, it was not to be. Lakin then kicked home the game-winning field goal with 44 seconds left and then Kelly was intercepted two plays later to end the comeback effort.
Iowa comes to Topeka on May 23 to play the Koyotes in the Kansas Expocentre.
The Koyotes are on the road again this week, playing the Springfield Wolf Pack Saturday at Mediacom Ice Park in Springfield, MO at 7:05 pm.

Koyotes earn sixth straight title
Team completes 11-1 season with 62-36 win
By Rick Peterson Jr.

Published Sunday, August 03, 2008
The Kansas Koyotes were overwhelming favorites to capture their sixth consecutive American Professional Football League championship Saturday night against Beaumont (Texas).
And after a slow start, the 11-1 Koyotes lived up to their billing, rolling to a 62-36 win against the Drillers at Landon Arena.
The Drillers, who hadn't played a game since May 31, used an aerial attack keyed by quarterback Tony Eckert to take an early 12-6 lead. But the Koyotes bounced back to take a nine-point lead at halftime and dominated the second half.
"We knew they were going over the top," Koyotes coach Jim Green said. "We talked about that over the week. We knew we were going to have to shut that long pass down and also get pressure on the quarterback.
"We made some adjustments on the front line, and it really did pay off."
Koyotes cornerback Henry Talley, who grabbed two interceptions in the game, including a 27-yard return for a touchdown, said that Beaumont's speed gave the Koyotes problems early on.
"They were a good team, and they had some fast people and we had to adjust to their speed," he said. "We had to get back playing our football so we just made adjustments and made plays off of that."
Mike Steen ran for three touchdowns to key the Koyotes' offense, while Solomon Brittian scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns off kickoff returns.
Steen, who joined the Koyotes this year, said that the season was an exciting one.
"It's just been a lot of brotherly love," Steen said. "We had a lot of people showing up that loved to win.
"We let one slip away (a loss to Iowa) from a perfect season, but we made up for it with a championship, and that's all that matters."
The Koyotes, got a pair of 3-yard first-half touchdown runs from Steen, an 11-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Bolden Jr. to Josh Freeman and the interception return from Talley to build a 27-18 halftime lead.
Eckert hit Jerrod Fuller for a 36-yard touchdown pass on the Drillers' first offensive play. Eckert also hit Roland Hayes for a 15-yard scoring pass in the first quarter and connected with Fuller for a 9-yard score in the second period.
Kansas ended any hopes of a Beaumont comeback with two third-quarter touchdowns then outscored the Drillers 21-18 in a wild final period.
The Koyotes overcame a 239-yard passing effort from Eckert and a 109-yard receiving night from Fuller, who caught four of Eckert's six touchdown passes.

2008 APFL Championship Game
The race for the APFL Championship is down to two as the Kansas Koyotes, with a 10 – 1 record, learned their opponent for the season’s biggest game this Saturday at the Kansas Expocentre. The Beaumont (TX) Drillers will bring their 9 – 3 record to Topeka for the title tilt at 7:05 PM, Saturday, August 2nd.
The Drillers, formerly of the National Indoor Football League (NIFL), are in their first year in the APFL and their ninth season overall. The Drillers made the playoffs four times in the NIFL, however, this is their first ever appearance in a Championship Game.
The Drillers are led by veteran indoor professional football coach Bryan Blake. Blake in his first year in the APFL has coached for five years in indoor professional football for teams in the af2 and the NIFL. He also played in both leagues prior to becoming a coach.
The Koyotes are led by third year head coach Jim Green. Green has led the Koyotes to their last two Championships as well as an assistant in their very first in 2003. Rookie quarterback Nathan Bolden leads the Koyotes on the field , and the most veteran player on the roster, Justin Wrecke, is Bolden’s favorite target leading the league in touchdown receptions.

Florida Scorpions in town on Saturday
The Koyotes will be playing this weekend April 26th at 7:05pm in Landon Arena at the Kansas Expocentre. The Florida Scorpions (formerly nicknamed the Knights) will be the opponent. The Scorpions are a transfer from the now defunct National Indoor Football League (NIFL). Ironically, the NIFL was the intended league for the Koyotes until shaky leadership led them to the more regional APFL. The Florida team is a bit of an unknown since this will be their first game in the APFL. However, they are expected to be as most football teams in Florida tend to be – full of plenty of size and speed.
