KOYOTES HOPE TO BOUNCE BACK AGAINST WARRIORS

by Rick Peterson, Topeka Capitol Journal

The Kansas Koyotes, who suffered a disappointing 67-20 loss to the Oklahoma Defenders last week in their home opener, will try to get back on track at 7:05 p.m. Saturday when they play the winless Cheyenne Warriors in Landon Arena.

Koyotes coach Troy Biladeau said he hopes his team will take out last week’s struggles on the Warriors.

“When a team gets beat like that that, they’re going to do one of two things the next game — they’re going to come out timid and feeling sorry for themselves or they’re going to take it out on their opponent and play really well,” he said. “We’d like to show the home crowd that we’re a better team than what we showed.

“If we do win, we’re 3-1 and in a pretty good position.”

Biladeau said the Koyotes will have to shore things up on both sides of the ball.

“We just have to be more consistent offensively and defensively,” he said. “We had a couple breakdowns defensively. We had a couple miscommunications with the quarterbacks and receivers. We’re just going to try to simplify things up.”

Despite last week’s lopsided defeat, Biladeau said he wasn’t too alarmed about his team’s letdown.

“If it had been our first game I’d really be down in the dumps, but we beat two teams on the road and played pretty well,” he said. “It was just one of those games that got away from us toward the end.”

The Koyotes will make a concerted effort to improve their passing game after throwing for just 70 yards against Oklahoma.

“Once our passing game gets going, it’s really going to open up the run more,” Biladeau said. “Teams are really creeping up on us, so we’ve got to get the passing game going.”

Carlos Kelly and Bobby Adamson again are expected to split time at quarterback. Kelly was 1-for-6 passing last week for nine yards. Adamson was 6-for-13 for 61 yards and four interceptions to go with one touchdown.

“I think they both deserve to play,” Biladeau said. “They both have some strengths; we just need to get them into a rhythm.”

Cheyenne is 0-5 after dropping a 30-28 decision last weekend against the Colorado Lightning.

The Koyotes handed the Warriors a 34-27 loss in the season opener on March 31.
